California learner permit

Your California knowledge-test roadmap.

Follow the California path for your age, prepare the application, and study for the original Class C knowledge test.

How the knowledge-test step works

Four California checkpoints before an instruction permit.

California separates the provisional path for minors from the adult instruction-permit path. Start with the rule that applies on the day you apply.

  1. Choose the correct age path

Applicants can start the provisional-permit path at age 15½. Most applicants under 18 need driver education and a parent or guardian signature, but those age 17½ to 18 may obtain a permit without driver-education or driver-training certificates and must wait until 18 for the drive test.

  2. Start the 12-month application

Complete the DL/ID application, gather the required identity and California residency documents, and pay the application fee. The application and fee remain valid for 12 months.

  3. Study the handbook and official samples

California DMV says every knowledge-test question comes from the handbook. Its official questions have one correct answer and two other choices, so use the sample Class C tests to check your readiness.

  4. Complete the DMV requirements

Provide your documents, take a vision exam and photo, and pass the knowledge test with at least 80%. California DMV says an in-office knowledge test must begin before 4:30 p.m.

Official knowledge test

California sets clear rules for the knowledge test.

Our independent practice sets help you study.

  • Original Class C applicants take a multiple-choice knowledge test.
  • You have three attempts to pass before you must submit a new application.
  • Applicants under 18 must wait seven days before retesting, not counting the day of the failed test.
  • Testing aids such as the California Driver’s Handbook or a phone are not allowed during the test.

What needs extra attention

California details worth planning for.

The official test rules, age exceptions, and post-permit requirements are easier to manage when you separate them instead of treating California as one universal path.

  • The minor path has a 17½-year-old exception. Applicants age 15½ to under 18 normally submit driver-education proof and a parent or guardian signature. Those age 17½ to 18 may obtain a permit without driver-education or driver-training certificates, but cannot take the drive test until age 18.
  • A failed test uses one of three attempts. The application allows three knowledge-test attempts. Applicants under 18 must wait seven days before retesting, excluding the day of the failed test.
  • A minor’s permit starts a supervised-driving sequence. Applicants under 18 generally need a six-month permit period, professional driver training, and 50 hours of supervised practice including 10 at night before the drive test. California does not state the same six-month wait for adult permit holders.

Use California’s official study tools

Study the source, then check your readiness.

DMV USA is an independent study companion, not the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Our four-choice practice sets are independent study tools, not replicas of the official California test. Use them to identify weak topics, then confirm the rule in the handbook and official three-choice samples.
