Four checkpoints before the New York knowledge test.

The knowledge test is one part of the learner-permit process. Use this route to prepare, then verify the current details with the NY DMV.

  1. Check the NY DMV requirements

    Start with the current permit and knowledge-test information, especially if your age, location, or application details may affect the process.

  2. Gather documents for the application

    Use the NY DMV application guidance to prepare the identity documents required for a learner-permit application before you arrive.

  3. Study rules, signs, and safe driving

    Use the New York State Driver’s Manual for the rules and traffic controls covered by the Class D knowledge test.

  4. Complete the vision and knowledge tests

    For a Class D learner permit, complete the vision test and the 20-question knowledge test, including the road-sign requirement.

What can make the knowledge-test step harder.

Use study time for the rules and signs, then leave room to verify the permit details that apply to you.

  • Road signs have their own pass gate. You need at least 2 correct answers from the 4 road-sign questions, even when your total score reaches 14 out of 20.
  • Junior permit rules vary by location. New York has different junior permit restrictions in New York City, Long Island, and upstate New York.
  • Application readiness is separate from study. Identity documents are required for the permit application, and documents not in English need a certified English translation.
