California learner’s permit

California knowledge test study plan

Use California’s handbook, official Class C samples, and test-attempt rules to build a focused study plan.

Build the plan around the official question source

California DMV says every knowledge-test question comes from the California Driver’s Handbook, so organize each session around a handbook section rather than memorizing isolated answers.

Cover rules of the road and safe-driving decisions as well as signs, signals, and pavement markings.

Use the official three-choice samples

Official California questions present one correct answer and two other choices. Take the DMV sample Class C tests after studying, and look up every missed rule in the handbook.

Our independent sets use four answer choices and more image-led questions, so treat them as broader study practice rather than a copy of the official test interface.

Plan for the attempt rules

You need at least 80% to pass the instruction-permit knowledge test and receive three attempts before a new application is required.

If you are under 18, a failed attempt is followed by a seven-day wait, excluding the day you failed. Do not use a phone, handbook, or other testing aid during the test.
